ECNS App DownloadChinese scientists have completed a deep-sea drilling project to obtain a sediment core with a length of 231 meters from a depth of over 2,000 meters in the South China Sea, setting a new world record for deep-sea drilling.
Aboard a marine research vessel, Chinas independently developed drilling system “Sea Bull II” took approximately 15 hours to drill the sediment on the seabed 2,060 meters under the sea on Wednesday.
The system, weighing 12 tonnes, is currently Chinas heaviest piece of underwater geological exploration equipment. As the worlds only seabed drilling apparatus with a drilling capacity of more than 200 meters, it can help explore natural gas hydrate resources in the seabed.
The system was developed by professor Wan Buyan and his team at the Hunan University of Science and Technology.
Wan said that in the next few years, his team will attempt to drill sediment at a depth of 11,000 meters in the Mariana Trench to research the evolution of the trenchs ecosystems.Related newsChinese researchers report new deep-sea lobster species2021-04-01Chinas soft robot realizes deep-sea exploration and free-swimming2021-03-06Chinese researchers develop soft robot for deep-sea exploration2021-03-04MorePhotoCanadas Ontario announces one-month lockdown as COVID-19 continues rampagingBeiDou directed seeders work in Xinjiangs cotton fieldsVerdant forest of metasequoia lights up Spring in JiangsuSpeed skating for Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics tested at National Speed Skating OvalNASA’s Mars helicopter carries a piece of Wright brothers’ plane for first flightChinese scientists discover neopterygian fish fossil 244 mln-year agoAquaculture floats at sea farm in Lianjiang, FujianIn pics: night life in WuhanPanda cub in Japan enjoys sunbath‘Dying town’ in Italy shrinks to one third of original sizeEagle carries wild pig into the airPoverty Alleviation: Chinas Experience and ContributionYulan magnolia flowers bloom on top of Huangshan MountainBlooming hydrangeas flowers attract visitors to NanjingNTU Singapore scientists develop plant communication deviceXiamen University holds gala evening to mark 100 yearsNew crack with lava appears at Icelandic Volcano130-ton selfie giant panda debuts in SW China13 Tibetan monks receive Buddhisms highest degreeNASA Ingenuity Mars Helicopter ready for first flightNewly-come bear cub makes friends with chimpanzee at Turkey’s zooEgypt to transport 22 mummies to new homeGiant panda Ai Bao enjoys afternoon leisure time in S KoreaScenery of Xiling Gorge amid the misty rainAmerican Museum of Natural History sees increasing number of visitorsBerlin to impose curfew from Easter amid rising COVID-19 concernsSunset scenery of Qinghai Lake picturesqueCOVID-19 vaccination underway in YunnanXiongan New Area under large-scale constructionHunan stages a Guochao show to promote traditional cultureJapanese stunt pilot draws a smile over TokyoBlue tears light up waters in XiamenThe Three Kingdoms exhibition held in ChengduSniffer dog trained to detect COVID-19 in human sweatGuangji Bridge in Guangdong: Free to connect and disconnectCherry blossom season arrives in Washington D.C.Most popular in 24h$(function () {$.ajaxSetup({cache: true});var tStr = new Date().getUTCHours()+_+ new Date().getUTCMinutes();$.ajax({type: “get”,dataType: “json”,url: “/part/6/ecns_rank24h.json?t=”+ tStr,success: function (status) {var str = “”;$.each(status,function(index,obj){obj.title = obj.title.replace(/'/g, ');str +=+obj[“title”]+;});$(“#rank24″).html(str);},error:function(status){}});});MoreTop newsGlobal experts see COVID-19 lockdown in Wuhan last year as timely, wise step China issues guideline on easing market access in Hainan free trade port HKSAR chief executive to table local electoral legislation amendment bill to LegCo next week Descendant of Flying Tigers rescuer recalls the past New explosive ordnance disposal tech debuts at training baseMoreVideoDescendant of Flying Tigers rescuer recalls the pastNew explosive ordnance disposal tech debuts at training baseLINEMedia partners:Peoples Daily Online|Xinhuanet|China.org.cn|ChinaDaily.com.cn|CGTN|Globaltimes.cn|Chinaplus.cri.cn|Shine.cn|JSCHINA|
